“…Simon, Son of John, Do You Love Me?…”

He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me [with a deep, personal affection for Me, as for a close friend]?” Peter was grieved that He asked him the third time, “Do you [really] love Me [with a deep, personal affection, as for a close friend]?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know everything; You know that I love You [with a deep, personal affection, as for a close friend].” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep. John 21:17 (Amp)

Today we are in the very last chapter of the book of John, this is the resurrected Jesus talking to His disciple Simon Peter, the disciple that has denied Jesus three times and He asked Simon Peter for the third time, as scripture says, He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me [with a deep, personal affection for Me, as for a close friend]?” Peter was grieved that He asked him the third time, “Do you [really] love Me [with a deep, personal affection, as for a close friend]?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know everything; You know that I love You [with a deep, personal affection, as for a close friend].” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep.

Simon Peter is given a command for the third time, a command to shepherd and feed God’s sheep. The dynamics of this conversation, the dynamics of the command is so divinely important for Simon Peter, the Lord Jesus repeats Himself by asking three distinct times.

Today’s as we go into our prayers, as we position ourselves to answer this question, where does God find our heart, mind, and soul, are we as Simon Peter humbled, but with assurity that if we don’t know anything else, we for sure know we love God.

Today let’s take a moment and let us answer with assurity, let us with whole heart, mind and soul respond to Jesus’s definitive question, Simon, son of John, do you love me?
