“…The Lord Smelled The Pleasing Aroma…”
“The Lord smelled the pleasing aroma [a soothing, satisfying scent] and the Lord said to Himself, “I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intent (strong inclination, desire) of man’s heart is wicked from his youth; and I will never again destroy every living thing, as I have done.” Genesis 8:21 (Amp)
Today we arrive in the book of Genesis the 8th chapter, this is after the great flood which filled the entire earth because of the sinful state of mankind. This is after the waters receded from the entire earth (Gen 8:9) and God told Noah go out of the Ark, take his family and all the living creatures and replenish the earth, and this is after Noah had built an altar to the Lord and offered a burnt offering to the Lord, the scripture says, The Lord smelled the pleasing aroma [a soothing, satisfying scent] and the Lord said to Himself, “I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intent (strong inclination, desire) of man’s heart is wicked from his youth; and I will never again destroy every living thing, as I have done.
Today as we take a moment in our prayers, let’s be mindful that we deserved to be destroyed in the flood because of our wickedness and sinful nature from our youth, one Bible translation says we were bent toward evil from childhood, but in this verse the Lord God has compassion and shows love and patience towards us, this is humbling, this is sobering, first because God was pleased with the aroma of Noah’s burnt offering and because He now promises to never again curse the ground because of the human race, He now promises to never again destroy everything living thing, as He has done.
This is sobering because we now live in God’s graces, His love, mercy, patience and compassion, all of this and much more is sealed in us, through us, and for us by Christ’s finished work on the cross and through His shed blood. Our Lord Jesus is The ultimate sacrifice, the once and for all sacrifice that redeems us and reconciles us back to our rightful place with God.
So, today let’s rejoice because the Lord smelled the pleasing aroma!
